St. Mary Organic Farm Community Garden

Food Day 2011

More than 250 people joined us here in the garden Oct. 23 along with thousands of participants around the country to celebrate the first National Food Day. SMOF hosted several organizations for this event, which featured a beautiful Percheron draft horse named Dharma tilling an area in our garden.

Other activities included food preservation, composting, playing with giant bubbles and corn kernels, a food drive for the hungry, making take-home scarecrows, and learning about nutrition, honeybees, bat houses, plants, fruit trees and food justice.

Food Day is intended to generate recognition for "real food" and the challenges we face regarding the food we produce and eat. Food Day aims to promote safe and healthy foods, support sustainable farms and promote access to healthy food for all.

St. Mary Organic Farm is a two-acre community garden using sustainable growing practices. We are located on 260 acres of land owned by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the heart of Monroe, Mich. The IHM Sisters were founded in Monroe in 1845 and used sustainable farming practices for decades. In 1998, the IHM community broke ground for the organic garden as part of their commitment to  sustainability as the "moral mandate of the 21 century."

St. Mary Organic Farm is dedicated to the renewal of local, sustainable food systems through its mission of Caring for the Land, Building Community. Our gardens, integrative educational programs and meditation programs empower sisters, associates, families, seniors, youth, prisoners and townspeople to grow food and inspire them to form communities dedicated to environmental responsibility and healthy living.
