IHM Motherhouse Chapel Preservation

The IHM Motherhouse Chapel in Monroe, Mich., is a center of spiritual life of the IHM community and a place for prayer for area residents. Memories of special and sacred moments are often shared by those who have spent time in prayer, worship, celebration and reflection in the Chapel.

In 2003 the sisters created a Chapel Committee to research the needs for Chapel renovation. Their work resulted in the current master plan for the necessary preservation and updates.

The need: After 70 years of use and the toll exacted by the harsh winters of the upper Midwest, many revered features and systems in the Chapel are in dire need of attention. The Mayer stained glass windows are deteriorating. Poor lighting makes it difficult for many people to read prayer books, hymnals and other printed materials. The sound and electrical systems must be replaced. Cameras will be added to allow sisters who are ill or infirm to view liturgies and celebrations while remaining in their rooms.

Just as the original construction of the Chapel was made possible by generous donations from friends and families of IHM Sisters, we are looking for support to help us preserve the Motherhouse Chapel for the Sisters today. To make this important project possible, we are seeking to raise one million dollars in pledges, gifts and bequests from our friends, families and partners.
