IHMs in Ministry

IHMs have a long and rich history of leadership in formal education -- communicating values and imparting knowledge to children and adults of all backgrounds from grade school to college. The IHM Community, responding in faith and commitment to the world's changing needs, has expanded its ministries to include social and mental health services, pastoral care in parishes, hospitals, nursing homes and hospices, ministry to prisoners, senior care and social justice advocacy and spirituality.

Gifts to IHMs in ministry support the community as we continue our commitment to serve people and minister to reduce suffering and improve quality of life. These sisters embody Jesus' liberating message to free people from all that binds them -- poverty, hunger, loneliness, illiteracy or injustice.

Your support ensures the enduring vitality of the community's mission by providing future generations of IHMs the freedom to continue to minister to others. The annual Royal Blue Classic (RBC) golf event fundraiser supports the IHM ministries that serve the needs of the poor.

Sister Lucy Abbey is a Pastoral Associate at St. Suzanne/Our Lady Gate of Heaven Parish, Detroit, Mich.

"I believe the Church in an urban setting clearly needs to bring 'good news' to people in many areas of their lives - faith formation, neighborhood outreach, after school tutoring programs, reading enrichment and wholesome family development.  I am called to be a bearer of this 'good news' and feel very blessed to minister in an inter-racial parish.  Our Friendship Center is an oasis of 'good news' for the families in our westside Detroit community."

Sister Margaret (Thomas Edward) McAnoy  ministers as a chaplain and healing team member of St. Joseph Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.

"Because this hospital specializes in heart care, there are many rural poor cardiac patients from all over north Georgia.  It is a gift to be with people when they are very ill or dying - that they allow me to enter their private space and share a painful but sacred time.  It is a joy to go to work and to be of such service."

Sister Barbara Northrup serves as an outreach therapist for the Older Adults Services Program at Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO), Wayne County, Mich.

"I am privileged to serve 300 older adults who are medically challenged, chronically mentally ill and financially impoverished.  Their age and society's stigma against them have complicated their mental illness.  I try to listen, care and lovingly help them remain out of the hospital."
- Sister Barbara Northrup
