Retreats

It is difficult to over-emphasize the value of retreats for spiritual growth. Through setting aside time for retreat, either personally arranged or chosen from available offerings, an individual or group is giving conscious attention to their need for time and focus in their quest for God and their desire to live in faithful spiritual relationship.

The IHM campus is pleased to provide a variety of retreat opportunities, all of which are coordinated through River House. To register for any of the following, contact River House - IHM Spirituality Center at 734-240-5494 or riverhouse@ihmsisters.org.

March Retreat

The Woman and the Sword: The Sorrows of Mary  Download flyer
Presentor: Brother Joel Giallanza, CSC

March 22 - 24
Time: 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Location:  IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI

The image of Mary as a survivor both of unthinkable blessings and unimaginable woes has always been a Christian ideal to pray and to imitate.  Now, with a contemporary look at a powerful devotion, Brother Joel Giallanza, C.S.C., meditates on the Seven Sorrows of Mary, showing us how in a life filled with sufferings, there is also grace, and that a world overcome with challenges awaits our strength.  Like Mary, we too can persevere and accept our struggles as paths to growing closer and understanding more deeply the power of her Son.

Holy Cross Brother Joel Giallanza is one of those rare people: someone who finds public speaking relaxing.  Bro. Joel, former Vicar for Religious for the Diocese of Austin, has conducted retreats and workshops about spiritual and religious life all over the world. He has traveled to Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, and across the United States. His areas of specialty are spirituality, Carmelite spirituality and trends in contemporary religious life. He has given workshops for religious sisters, religious brothers, priests, laypeople and parishes.

To register, contact Sister Arlene Jekielek, IHM, at 734-240-9699 or e-mail ajekielek@ihmsisters.org
Deadline to register: March 17, 2010

Private Retreats

Often times, the need for personal space is the driving concern in seeking a time of retreat. Overnight accommodations and undisturbed quiet for day-time reflection can be arranged at River House, as well as at the retreat house or hermitages at Visitation. In each case, cost is $45 per night for the first two nights, then $25 for each additional night. Scheduling is arranged according to room availability and inquirer's needs/desires. Retreatants provide and prepare their own food.

Directed Retreats

Directed  retreats offer extended time to focus on the Spirit of God in our lives, assisted by meetings with a spiritual director. Typically, directed retreats have a pattern of prayer, listening, contemplation and solitude.  Directed retreats might be for a weekend, a week or longer. Thirty-day retreats and 19th Annotation retreats are also available. Scheduling is arranged according to room availability, inquirer's needs/desires, and availability of the spiritual director.

Group Retreats

Group retreats on various themes are provided on the campus a number of times each year.  A group retreat offers the individual the support of others on the spiritual path, and a facilitator who guides the process thru input, reflection, and sharing.

Future retreats being planned
