Nancy Lee Smith, IHM, and her ministry were recently featured in the winter 2012 edition of Monroe Magazine. The full-color five-page article, titled "A window onto holiness," described Nancy's work writing icons as "helping to center, calm and fascinate." Nancy is quoted as saying, "An icon isn't just an art form. It's a sacred image and an aid to prayer, furthering it."

Margaret (Peggy) Thompson, IHM Associate, was recently featured in Maxwell Perspective for her work researching the history of women's religious congregations in the United States. The article outlined how Peggy came to become an authority on the topic. Maxwell Perspectives is a publication from The Maxwell School of Syracuse University.

Kathryn Olsen, IHM, was appointed to the Tribunal for the Cause of Canonization for the Servant of God, Reverend Stanley Francis Rother. Rev. Rother was a priest from the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City who was martyred in Guatemala in July 1981. The Tribunal worked on the materials and interviews necessary for the Cause of Canonization for three years and made a pilgrimage of faith to Guatemala to participate in the celebration of the 30th anniversary. Rev. Rother's cause had been accepted in Rome for the continued process of canonization.

Janice Soleau, IHM, was named as a "Distinguished Alumni" of Marygrove College at an awards celebration Sept. 16. The Marygrove College Distinguished Alumni Awards were established in 2002 to recognize and honor alumni of distinction. These awards celebrate Marygrove's ideals of competence, commitment and compassion.

Jannita Complo, IHM, received a federal grant in the creative arts to foster her work in Dramakinetics. Although Jannita's place of ministry for more than 17 years, the Children's Creativity Center, has closed, she will be marketing her book, Dramakinetcs in the Classroom, conducting her workshops with teachers, and using pertinent kinetic activities with parents to reduce obesity in children. She will continue to mentor the Dramakinetcs Center in Cincinnati and train college students in performing arts.

Sandra Schneiders, IHM, has been selected as one of only seven 2011-12 Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology. The fellowship funds research projects that emphasize the interdisciplinary character of theological scholarship and education. It enables each Fellow to conduct year-long research in one of several areas of theological inquiry. In addition, Fellows present their findings at a yearly conference, and in both scholarly and popular journals. Sandra's research will focus on the topic of "Risen Jesus, Cosmic Christ: Biblical Spirituality in the Gospel of John."

Michigan Green Leaders Award - Paula Cathcart, IHM, and Gloria Rivera, IHM, are among this year's 16 Detroit Free Press 2011 Michigan Green Leaders. They are being recognized for their work to help build sustainable communities through Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit.

Christine Gellings, IHM, was featured in the January-February issue of The North Carolina Catholic, one of three women religious in the Diocese of Raleigh celebrating milestone anniversaries. The article outlined Chris's background and her current ministry. She celebrates her 50th anniversary as an IHM Sister this year.

Amata Miller, IHM, was awarded the Monika K. Hellwig Award from the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. The award is given to "an individual who has significantly advanced Catholic intellectual life" and was presented at the ACCU annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 28.

Nancy Lee Smith, IHM, was one of the featured artists in Monroe Magazine's Artist Showcase in early February. The showcase, held at the Motherhouse Triple Dining Room, featured a black-tie preview event to benefit the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, as well as a free event for the general public.

B arbara Beesley, IHM, will be one of six women representing the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in New York Feb. 19-26. The WILPF will work with the United Nationals Commission on the Status of Women.

Janet Ryan, IHM, has been named chairperson of the Mercy Memorial Hospital (Monroe) Board of Trustees. Her term runs through January 2012. Janet served as vice chairperson for two years and has served on the board since 2008.

Jane Herb, IHM, Ph.D., began her three year term as president of the Chief Administrators in Catholic Education (CACE) at the annual meeting held in Mobile, Ala., in October. She was elected as CACE vice-president/president-elect three years ago.
CACE is a of the department of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), a professional organization providing leadership, direction and service to fulfill the evangelizing mission, catechizing and teaching mission of the Church. CACE promotes an awareness of the value of total Catholic education to the entire community, fostering the mission of NCEA. The organization is responsible for professional growth of the members and provides a forum to exchange ideas. As president of CACE, Jane is a member of the NCEA board and was recently elected as secretary of the board.

Patricia Aseltyne, IHM, received a Jefferson Award from Houston KPRC Local 2 News in November. The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 to honor those who work behind the scenes. Individuals are nominated through a nationwide network of Jefferson Award media sponsors. They are given monthly to "unsung heroes" who are making a difference in the lives of others through outstanding personal acts. Pat was honored for her work with Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos (House of Hope for Children), where she serves as the aftercare outreach coordinator.

Rita Carey, IHM Associate, was featured as a volunteer at Children's Hospital of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center in the October issue of Hour Detroit magazine. The full-page photo of Rita holding an infant includes mentions that Rita has spent nearly every Friday for 20 years holding babies in need of human touch.

Margaret Susan (Peggy) Thompson, IHM Associate, was featured on ABCNews.com on Oct. 26. The story focused on Peggy's intergenerational honors history course, Religion and American Politics, at Syracuse University and the positive give-and-take between older adults and undergraduates. On Sept. 9, there was a three-hour reception at Michigan State University honoring Sister Veronica Mary Maher for her exceptional accomplishments as a cancer research scientist and for her 34 years of service to the University.
Her research for her Ph.D. thesis at the University of Wisconsin, McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research showed for the first time that reactive forms of carcinogenic compounds attack DNA and cause mutations. This finding led to the present understanding of how chemical carcinogens and radiation cause cancer. (Read more here...) |

Margaret Brennan, IHM, was named as a "Distinguished Alumni" of Marygrove College at an awards celebration in September. The Marygrove College Distinguished Alumni Awards were established in 2002 to recognize and honor alumni of distinction. These awards celebrate Marygrove's ideals of competence, commitment and compassion. Margaret s many achievements within the Sister Formation Movement, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and as general superior of the IHM congregation were cited in the awards booklet.

Rose Mary Ala, IHM, received the Ignatian Spirituality Award from Manresa Jesuit Retreat House at its seventh annual Spirit of Manresa Dinner and Auction on Sept. 25. Rose Mary received the award for nearly 25 years of giving retreats and offering spiritual direction at Colombiere as well as at Manresa and for her involvement as a supervisor for interns in the spiritual direction program.

Amata Miller, IHM, was presented with the 2010 Bonnie Jean Kelly and Joan Kelly Faculty Excellence Award at St. Catherine University's opening convocation Sept. 8. Amata is a St. Catherine University economics professor and director of the Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity. The award has been presented annually since 2006. It recognizes accomplishments in teaching, scholarship and other achievements in the honoree's field and carries a $10,000 cash prize.
