Jan. 18, 2010

The IHM Sisters of Monroe are accepting donations to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Those wishing to make donations can send checks to the IHM congregation. All funds will be divided among three well-established and effective organizations that will provide both immediate relief and long-term sustainable reconstruction of Haiti: Catholic Relief Services, Fonkoze and Partners in Progress. Checks should be made payable to the IHM Sisters with a note in the memo line indicating that the donation is for "Haiti Earthquake Relief." Checks should be mailed to:

Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is of special concern to the IHM Sisters. Mother Theresa Maxis, the foundress of the IHM congregation who was inducted into the Monroe County Hall of Fame, is of Haitian descent. The IHM Sisters have supported the people of Haiti since 1959 through education, investment, advocacy and sustainable development.

Together with the IHM Sisters of Scranton and Immaculata in Pennsylvania and the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore, the Monroe IHM Sisters have supported the work of indigenous religious women in Haiti and the economic empowerment of poor women.

In 2008, the River Raisin Institute, which was founded by the IHM Sisters, the Peasant Association of Fondwa and Partners in Progress collaborated with faculty and students at Monroe County Community College on a project to build, install and train Haitians to maintain a solar powered computer lab at the University of Fondwa in Haiti.
