IHM Sisters hold women's spirituality and culture series
Jan. 10, 2012

The IHM Sisters' series, "Culture-Inspired Spiritualities American Mosaic" Women's Experience," resumes in February in the Community Room of the IHM Motherhouse.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, Rabbi Arianna Gordon provides the Jewish perspective; on Tuesday, March 13, Anzen M.J. Davenport offers the Buddhist perspective; on Tuesday, April 17, Ruth Carey gives the Quaker perspective; and on Tuesday, May 8, a panel of IHM Sisters provides the Native American perspective. All programs run from 2:30-4 p.m., and are open to the public.

Rabbi Gordon is the director of education at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Mich. She earned a master's degree in Jewish education from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. Following her ordination, she spent three years as religious school director at Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland before returning to the Detroit area where she was born and raised.

Anzen M.J. Davenport was also born and raised in Detroit. She has been a resident Dharma teacher/monk at Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple since her ordination in May 2009 in the Korean Chogye Order. She is currently completing a dual bachelor's degree in anthropology and media studies at Wayne State University.

Ruth Carey has her childhood roots in the Michigan farm experience. After a career in public health nursing, she is now retired. Ms. Carey has attended Ann Arbor Friends Meeting since 1991.

The panel of IHMs will be composed of Sisters Jannita Complo, Joyce Durosko, Laetitia Lariviere and Janet Provost. The four ministered among many Native American tribes for a combined total of more than 60 years. They will discuss how their lives were changed by these indigenous cultures whose spirituality is so deeply embedded in their interconnectedness with Mother Earth and all creation.

A free-will offering is requested for the programs. Registration is required. Please contact Arlene Jekielek, IHM, at 734-240-9699 or ajekielek@ihmsisters.org. Overnight accommodations are available at River House Spirituality Center for $45 per night for one to two nights and $25 for each additional night. To reserve a room, contact River House at 734-240-5494, or email riverhouse@ihmsisters.org.
