New art exhibit opens at
IHM Sisters' Visitation Barn
March 25, 2008

The IHM Visitation Spirituality Center's "Art in the Barn Series" will feature the works of artists Zena Carnaghi and Dorothea Krieg, from April 13-May 17 in an exhibit called, "Here and Beyond."

Carneghi's art originates from personal experience. It transforms feelings and emotion into tangible abstract forms using symbolism to reinforce meaning. She has studied watercolor, monotype and collage at Wayne State University, the College for Creative Studies and Windsor Printmaker's Forum. More information >>

Monroe church choirs to
present concert at IHM Chapel

Celebrate spring with the latest in the Chapel Concert Series at the IHM Motherhouse when the Monroe County Church Choral Festival takes place Sunday, April 20, at 2:30 p.m.

Church choirs from around the county will participate. Each will perform as an individual choir and then all will come together to lift their voices in songs of praise and thanksgiving as they make beautiful and joyful music. A free-will offering is requested.  Read more >>

"The Iraq War: Five Years Too Many and No End in Sight"
March 6, 2008

The IHM Justice, Peace and Sustainability Office and Monroe for Peace and Justice will host two events to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War.

On Saturday, March 15, the two groups will host a screening of the film, No End in Sight, at 1:30 p.m. in the IHM Motherhouse Community Room. No End in Sight was nominated for best feature length documentary at the 2007 Academy Awards. U.S. officials, American soldiers, prominent analysts and Iraqi civilians provide a candid retelling of the events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003. Read more >>

Initiative supports school-community environmental
restoration efforts in the River Raisin Watershed
Feb. 18, 2008

Thanks to a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, local high school students who identified major environmental problems are now implementing plans to improve the health of local ecosystems.

The River Raisin Watershed Restoration Initiative teams high schools within the watershed - an area covering 1,072 square miles in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio - with conservation groups, businesses and government agencies. Read more >>

Chapel Concert series continues
Feb. 8, 2008

Get in the St. Patrick's Day spirit with a Celtic program on Sunday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m., part of the Chapel Concert Series at the IHM Sisters' Motherhouse.

The concert features Cecelia Webster playing the harp and hammered dulcimer, and Michael Baker on guitar and vocals. The duo, from Grosse Pointe, Mich., will perform a variety of Celtic folk songs, including jigs, reels and songs of love and remembrance. Read more >>

Presentation on Michigan Health Care
Ballot Initiative scheduled
Feb. 7, 2008

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m., in the IHM Motherhouse Community Room, Margaret Alandt, IHM, and Ann Nett, IHM, will offer information on the Michigan Health Care Security Campaign.

The campaign is a 2008 ballot initiative amending the state constitution to require the legislature to enact laws providing affordable health care for all Michigan citizens. Although the state spends about $6,000 per person per year on health care, health care costs continue to rise every year. Read more >>

Interactive Exhibit on AIDS Orphans from Around the World
Coming to Detroit to "Open Eyes and Touch Hearts"

A hands-on, interactive exhibit featuring AIDS orphans from around the world will be displayed at Marygrove College this winter.

The exhibit, "The Children Left Behind," which will open on Feb. 13 in The Gallery and will run through March 14, captures life through the eyes of orphans living in many cultures. More >>

IHM Sisters Offer "Praying
the Parables" Retreat
Jan. 9, 2008

Mary Ann Flanagan, IHM, and Monica Stuhlreyer, IHM, will facilitate a retreat at the IHM Motherhouse Feb. 18-20. The retreat will focus on the parables of Jesus.

"Jesus' parables give witness to the reign of God in our midst," says Judith Bonini, IHM, pastoral care director at the Motherhouse. "They offer a challenge to meet and respond to God's presence." More >>

IHM Chapel Concert Series Features
Organ and Trumpet duets
Jan. 7, 2008

The first IHM Chapel Concert presentation for 2008 will feature organist Terry Jankowski and Kiri Tollaksen on trumpet on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2:30 p.m. A free-will offering is requested.

Jankowski has been the music director at the IHM Motherhouse since 1998 and makes his second appearance on the Chapel Concert Series playing the renowned Casavant organ.  More >>

IHM Sisters Offer Weeklong
Centering Prayer Retreat
Dec. 14, 2007

IHM Associate Mary Ann Carolin will lead a weeklong retreat, with the theme of "Going Deeper," at the IHM Motherhouse Jan. 20-26. The retreat will focus on centering prayer.
Centering prayer - traditionally called contemplative prayer - emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God. It is a discipline to foster and serve this relationship by a regular, daily practice of prayer. More>>
