Justice

Habitat for HumanityIn the struggle to live the Gospel today,  IHMs recognize the call to serve the needs of God's people not only through the traditional works of mercy, but also by working with others to eradicate the causes of injustice and oppression and to help create structures that will promote justice and peace and bring unity among all people.

Pictured at right: IHMs have been involved in working with Habitat for Humanity since 1995 in Monroe, Mich. You can contact Habitat for Humanity at
www.habitat.org  Sister Joyce Durosko, IHM, and Sister Donna Hart, IHM (behind the table), are registering and assisting volunteers.

In doing the work of justice, IHMs urge one another to be conscious of the poverty, hunger and injustice suffered by the great majority of the human family and to make choices which clearly reflect that we stand with and for those who are oppressed and marginalized. They function as in a variety of ways including: social justice advocates, directors of social agencies, peace and justice program coordinators, social workers and attorneys.

Sister Elizabeth Walters, IHM, is familiar with the Israeli/Gaza conflict. She reports that a communal spirit has risen in response to the conflict and this solidarity is sorely needed by the Gazan people.

"The Jewish Fast for Gaza is an example of solidarity," says Sister Elizabeth. "Rabbis from across the United States have organized a monthly fast for Gaza. Muslims, Christians and other people of conscience are joining this fast."

Sister Elizabeth says the purpose of the fast days is to call for a lifting of the blockade that prevents the entry of civilian goods and services into Gaza; to provide humanitarian and developmental aid to the people of Gaza; to call upon Israel, the United States and the international community to engage in negotiations to end the blockade; and to encourage the American government to vigorously engage both Israelis and Palestinians toward a just and peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Upcoming fast days include Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17. For a brief  look at Gaza in its glory and Gaza today, read Sister Elizabeth's thought-provoking article.
