"This is Your Home" Three-Part Presentation
(Note: The three parts of the presentation are large and may take as long as 30 minutes to load. Please be patient. Requires Microsoft Power Point software to view.)
Part I - "Setting the Context." Part One outlines the factors affecting Earth's atmosphere from the origins of our planet to the state of the atmosphere today. Two key events, the dawn of agriculture 10,000 years ago and the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago, determined the degree of hospitality of Earth for its human inhabitants. Part One lays the groundwork for understanding global climate change.
Part II - "What's at Stake." Part Two considers the environmental, social and financial risks of global climate change. Although we generally take them for granted, human communities rely on their ecosystems to filter the air; provide food, water and shelter; ensure economic well-being; and manifest spiritual values. Part Two looks at the scientific evidence that ecosystems are breaking down and describes the dangers inherent in global climate change.
Part III - "Making a Difference." Part Three presents principles of Catholic Social Teaching and social analysis that can help guide people of faith to effective action to address the problem of global climate change. The social wisdom that sheds light on this ethical dilemma of our time includes the principles of the common good, the option for the poor, care for creation, subsidiarity (or self-governance), and solidarity (or caring for others). Part Three offers specific suggestions of things to do to make a difference.
