Starrs, Carol (Teresa Joseph), IHM
Nov. 30, 1936 - May 6, 2009

Sister Carol was one of two children, one boy and one girl of William and Mary (Stevens) Starrs. She attended St. Mary of Redford Elementary and High Schools. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1954, taking the religious name of Sister Teresa Joseph.

Sister Carol earned  bachelor's and master's degrees from Marygrove College. She taught in formal education for 23 years at Epiphany, Christ the King, and St. Agnes, Detroit; St. Hugo of the Hills, Bloomfield Hills; and Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Westchester, Ill. While at St. Agnes, Sister Carol directed the Elementary Tutorial Center.

Following her years in education, Sister Carol spent three years at the IHM Hospitality House in Detroit. She then ministered for six years at St. Rita Parish in Detroit as Christian Service coordinator, followed by a year at Marygrove College s Tutor/Writing Center. In 1997 Sister Carol lived at Hartman Hall on the Marygrove campus, did volunteer work and traveled to Monroe to use her musical skills as a pianist with the sisters in the Health Care Center. She returned to live at the IHM Motherhouse in 2004 and entered the Health Care Center in 2006, where she resided until her death. She was 72. This is her Remembering.

Szmania, Mary Ann (Michael Marie) , IHM 
April 13, 1933 - April 14, 2009

Sister Mary Ann was one of two children, one boy and one girl, of Leo and Virginia (Anderson) Szmania. She was born in Grafton, Ohio, and given the name Mary Ann. Sister Mary Ann attended St. Catherine Elementary and High Schools. She became a member of the IHM in 1952, taking the religious name of Sister Michael Marie.

Sister Mary Ann earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and master's degree from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 49 years at St. John, Monroe; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Detroit; St. John, Fenton, Holy Cross, Marine City; Our Lady of Miracles, Gustine, Calif.; Hall of the Divine Child, Monroe; Bishop Gallagher High School, Harper Woods; Marian High, Bloomfield Hills; St. Peter, Harper Woods; St. Germaine, St. Clair Shores; and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe Woods.

With her love of teaching she touched many lives. A quote which meant much to her is a good summary of her life, "Be kinder than necessary for everyone is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly." Sister Mary Ann taught all subjects and in every grade, with an emphasis on social studies/history. She started a Young Catholic Students group in California for high school girls. Sister Mary Ann retired in 2004, and did volunteer work while residing in Warren, Mich. She was 76. McClellan, Mary (Mary Ives), IHM
Oct. 14, 1921 - March 22, 2009

Sister Mary was one of three children, two boys, and one girl, of Ives and Elizabeth (Bennett) McClellan. She was born on Oct. 14, 1921, and given the name Mary Elizabeth. Mary attended St. Vincent elementary school and high school in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in Monroe in 1941, taking the religious name of Sister Mary Ives.

Sister Mary earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, and a master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She taught and ministered in administration in formal education for 63 years at Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; St. John, Benton Harbor; St. Hugo, Bloomfield Hills; St. Francis de Sales, Detroit; St. Columban, Birmingham; and Sacred Heart School, Dearborn.

During these 63 years in formal education, Sister Mary spent 34 years at St. Hugo's in Birmingham. She ministered as a teacher in the first grade for five years, eight years as principal, four years as co-principal, four years in administration and 13 years as a resource teacher. Besides this ministry, Sister Mary taught speech classes at Marygrove Speech Clinic and speech therapy classes at St. Francis de Sales. She enjoyed educational TV, enrichment programs in reading and classical music.

Sister Mary is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ives and Vincent. She was 87. This is her Remembering.

Pokrifkie, Virginia (Lenore), IHM
Feb. 25, 1919 - March 17, 2009

Sister Virginia was one of eight children, three boys and five girls, of Paul and Susan (Kott) Pokrifkie. She was born in Detroit, Mich. Sister Virginia attended St. Leo Elementary in Detroit and graduated from Chadsey High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1943, taking the religious name of Sister Lenore.

Sister Virginia earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and her master's degree from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 42 years at St. Mary, Monroe; St. Mary, Mt. Morris; St. Joseph, Trenton; St. Philip, Battle Creek; Christ the King and St. Mary of Redford, Detroit; St. Columban, Birmingham; St. Michael, Flint; Nativity, Hollywood, Fla.; Our Lady of Loretto, Redford, and 16 years at St. Felicitas, Chicago, Ill.

Throughout her life, Sister Virginia enjoyed growing indoor plants "for the sheer enjoyment of watching God work." She also, worked crossword puzzles. 

In 1988 Sister Virginia began a 12 year ministry of hospitality on the staff at St. Mary Conference Center in Monroe. She actively retired in 2000 at the Motherhouse and was admitted to the Health Care Center in 2002, where she resided until her death. She was 90. This is her Remembering.

Mogg, Rosaline (Claudine), IHM
Dec. 26, 1912 - March 14, 2009

Sister Rosaline Mogg, IHM, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, in the IHM Health Care Center, Monroe, Mich., at the age of 96.

Sister Rosaline was one of three girls of David and Mary (Murray) Mogg. She was born on Dec. 26, 1912, in Pontiac, Mich., and given the name Rosaline. Sister Rosaline attended elementary and high school at St. Frederick's in Pontiac. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1930, taking the religious name of Sister Claudine.

Sister Rosaline earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. She taught in formal education and served as administrator for 48 years at St. John, Monroe; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; Gesu, St. Boniface and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Detroit; Sacred Heart, Roseville; St. John, Benton Harbor; St. Michael, Flint; and Holy Name, Birmingham.

From 1971 until 2002 Sister Rosaline ministered at Immaculate Heart of Mary School and Parish in Mennetonka, Minn., as principal, coordinator of the learning center, bookkeeper, treasurer and volunteer. She actively retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 2003. She entered the Health Care Center in 2007 where she resided until her death. She was 96. This is her Remembering.

O'Toole,  Patricia (Augustine) IHM
April 26, 1921-March 10, 2009

Sister Patricia was one of seven children, two boys and five girls, of Maurice and Eulalia (Hannon) O'Toole. She was born  in Edwardsburg, Mich., and attended Niles Public School and St. Mary's in Niles, Mich., high school at Nazareth Academy, Kalamazoo, and graduated from Niles Public High School. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1941, taking the religious name of Sister Augustine.

Sister Patricia earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, and a master's degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. She taught in formal education for 29 years at Hall of the Divine Child and St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Charles, Coldwater; Gesu, Detroit: St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; Holy Cross, Marine City and St. Thomas, Ann Arbor. Sister Patricia taught choral and choir in parishes and, during retirement, developed her artistic talent.

In 1973, Sister Patricia began her ministry of 11 years at St. Patrick Parish in Ann Arbor as religious education director/coordinator, and as associate pastor. After a sabbatical year, she ministered at St. Jude Parish in Gobles, Mich., as pastoral minister for nine years. In 1994, Sister Patricia retired to Paw Paw, Mich., returning to the IHM Motherhouse in 2002. She entered the Health Care Center a year later, where she resided until her death. She was 87. Sister Patricia is survived by her sister, Maureen (Mrs. Robert Leonard) and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and Maurice, and her sisters, Margaret O'Toole, Eulalia (Mrs. John Zilly) and Sheila (Mrs. Robert Walters). 

Weibel, Catherine (Louis de Montfort), IHM
Sept. 6, 1933 - Feb. 6, 2009

Sister Catherine was one of three children, one boy and two girls, of Joseph and Viola (Rosselit) Weibel. She was born in Flint, Mich., and given the name Catherine. Sister Catherine attended St. Michael Elementary and High schools in Flint. She became a member of the IHM in Monroe in 1950, taking the religious name of Sister Louis de Montfort.

Sister Catherine earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and master's degree from Notre Dame University. She taught in formal education for nine years at Gesu, St. Gregory and St. Raymond in Detroit; St. John Vianney, Highland Park; Sacred Heart, Roseville and Sacred Heart, Dearborn. After a year of study at Notre Dame, Sister Catherine spent nine years at Marygrove College in Detroit studying, serving as a professor of theology and in administration and teaching in religious education. 

After a year at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., Sister Catherine ministered at the Center for Directed Retreats at Ossining, N.Y. In 1975 she began her ministry at Holy Rosary Parish in Saginaw, Mich., in parish ministry and religious education where she served for the next 15 years. She spent several years ministering in the Gospel Based Family Ministry in Clinton, Conn., and Word of Life Ministry in Knoxville, Tenn. For five years Sister Catherine lived in Portage, Mich., and served as a caregiver. In 2007 she retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe, where she resided until her death. She was 75. Faucher,
Beatrice (Nathaniel), IHM
Oct. 14, 1910-Feb. 6, 2009

Sister Beatrice Faucher, IHM, was one of four children, one boy and three girls, of Alfred and Catherine (Krantz) Faucher. She was born in Detroit and given the name Beatrice. Sister Beatrice attended Holy Redeemer Elementary and High Schools. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1929, taking the religious name of Sister Nathaniel.

Sister Beatrice earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 43 years at Blessed Sacrament, St. Martin, Marygrove College, St. Gregory, Christ the King and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Detroit; St. Mary, Mt. Morris; St. Joseph, Monroe; Sacred Heart, Roseville; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; and St. Anne High School, Warren.

Sister Beatrice ministered in pastoral work for 13 years as a staff member and pastoral associate at St. Rene Goupil Parish in Sterling Heights. She spent the next four years in the North East Provincial Offices in Taylor, Mich., as secretary and pastoral minister. She retired to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe in 1991, and stayed active with volunteer work until 2007. She entered the Health Care Center in 2007, where she resided until her death.

Sister Beatrice is survived by her sister Jean (Mrs. Lawrence Girard) and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother Gregory and her sister Constance (C Seventy). She was 98. Here is her Remembering.

Miller, Alice (Edmund Campion), IHM

July 31, 1934-Feb. 5, 2009

Sister Alice Miller, IHM, was one of seven children, three boys and four girls, of George and Marie (Kersting) Miller. She was born in Detroit and attended St. Matthew Elementary School and Dominican High School in Detroit. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1952, taking the religious name of Sister Edmund Campion.

Sister Alice earned a bachelor's of science degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree, also from Marygrove. She earned an associate's degree in gerontology from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 15 years at St. Cecilia, Detroit; St. Mary, Marshall; St. Raymond, Detroit; and Sacred Heart, Roseville.

After her years in formal education, Sister Alice became religious coordinator in the Thumb Deanery, the Diocese of Saginaw, where she ministered for three years. Sister Alice continued her ministry as a teacher and pastoral associate at St. Hugo of the Hills, Bloomfield Hills, and St. Rene Goupil, Sterling Heights. After one year, she became the full-time pastoral minister at St. Rene and stayed there for 12 years. In 1985 Sister Alice served as pastoral minister at St. Anne, Warren, where she remained in active ministry until her death.

Sister Alice is survived by her brothers, James and Charles, and her sisters, Rosemarie McClain, Elizabeth Bradley and Sister Marie (Marie George) Miller, IHM, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, George. You can read Sister Alice's Remembering.

Waickman, Anna Mary (Alphonsus Ligouri), IHM
May 20, 1920 - Jan. 11, 2009

Sister Anna Mary Waickman, IHM, was one of four children, three boys and one girl, of Leo and Catherine (Gilhooly) Waickman. She was born in Akron, Ohio, and given the name Anna Mary. Sister Anna Mary attended elementary school in Akron and high school at Villa Maria in Pennsylvania. She became a member of the IHM in 1949, taking the religious name of Sister Alphonsus Ligouri.

Sister Anna Mary earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree in library science from the University of Michigan. She taught in formal education for nine years at St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; and Marygrove College.

In 1959, Sister Anna Mary left her ministry in formal education and became librarian at Marygrove and assumed the position of director of the library in 1975. After 38 years of service in the Marygrove Library, she retired to the Marygrove convent and did volunteer work. She returned to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 2004.

Sister Anna Mary is survived by her brothers Paul and the Rev. Thomas Waickman, SJ, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Francis. She was 88. You can read Sister Anna Mary's Remembering.

DePrimo, Christa, IHM

Aug. 14, 1920 - Jan. 7, 2009

Sister Christa was one of two children, a boy and a girl, of Samuel and Anna (Yuhasz) DePrimo. She was born in Eleanor, Pa., and given the name Mildred. Sister Christa attended elementary and high school at Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in Monroe in 1941, taking the religious name of Sister Christa.

Sister Christa earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, a master's degree from the University of Detroit and a degree in pharmacy from the University of Michigan. She taught in formal education for 33 years at St. Mary Academy, Monroe; Marian High School, Bloomfield Hills; and St. Mary of Redford and Marygrove College, Detroit. During this time Sister Christa attended a summer program in chemistry at the National Science Foundation Institute in Brunswick, Maine.

From 1975 until 1978, Sister Christa studied pharmacy at the University of Michigan. She ministered as the pharmacist for the IHM Motherhouse Health Care Center for 21 years following the completion of her education. In 1999, Sister Christa retired. She took up residency at Norman Towers in Monroe for three years, returning to the Motherhouse in 2003. During this time, Sister Christa did volunteer work. She became a patient in the Health Care Center in 2008 and resided there until her death. This is her Remembering.
