Gilloe, Loretta (Thelma), IHM
July 1, 1913 - Sept. 29, 2008

Sister Loretta was one of five girls of Robert and Beatrice (McLaughlin) Gilloe. She was born in Detroit and given the name Loretta. Sister Loretta attended elementary school at St. Leo and St. Mary of Redford and graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School. She became a member of the IHM in 1931, taking the religious name of Sister Thelma.

Sister Loretta earned her bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and her master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 36 years at St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; St. Louis, Mt. Clemens; Our Lady of Good Council and St. Patrick, Detroit; St. Felicitas, Chicago; St. Michael and St. Matthew, Flint; St. Charles, Coldwater; St. Vincent, Pontiac; and St. Mary, Lorain, Ohio. She enjoyed music, sewing and reading.

In 1967 Sister Loretta began her ministry of 19 years at Lorain Catholic Central High School in Ohio and was involved as school counselor. She tried to make the students realize that the four years of high school was just the beginning, that there is a great life after if one is prepared. In 1986 she actively retired to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe working in the archives. She officially retired in 2003 and entered the Health Care Center in 2007, where she resided until her death. 

Sister Loretta is survived by a niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene (Mrs. Walter Hale), Beatrice, Sister Mary Robert, IHM, and Sister Helene, IHM.

Bach, Mary Ivan, IHM
July 17, 1916 - Sept. 29, 2008

Sister Mary Ivan was one of four girls of William and Margaret  (Mahony) Bach. She was born in Detroit and given the name Mary Rose. She attended St. Ann Elementary School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and graduated from Villa Maria High School in Wickliffe, Ohio. She became a member of the IHM in 1936, taking the religious name of Sister Mary Ivan.

Sister Mary Ivan earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and master's degrees from Wayne State University and the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 40 years at St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; St. Hugo, Bloomfield Hills; St. Joseph, Dexter; St. Charles, Coldwater; Immaculata, Gesu, St. Cecilia, Blessed Sacrament, St. Rose, St. Mary of Redford, Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick, Detroit; Holy Name Birmingham; St. Mary, Mt. Morris; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; Sacred Heart, Dearborn; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; IHM High School, Westchester, Ill.; Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Mary Academy, Monroe; and one year in Ireland.

Following these years of teaching, Sister Mary Ivan spent a year as director of the ESL Program and tutoring in the Bedford Public Schools. She then returned to Monroe to coordinate the IHM Adult Education Program at St. Mary Academy. From 1982-1994, Sister Mary Ivan worked in the IHM general business office, followed by eight years working in the IHM Archives. She retired in 2001 and entered the Health Care Center in 2002, where she resided until her death. She was 92.

Sister Mary Ivan was preceded in death by her sisters Esther, Mildred and Helen (Mrs. Carl L. Laufer). She is survived by nieces and nephews.

McDonell, Ruth (Marie Elise)
Nov. 9, 1917 - Aug. 6, 2008

Sister Ruth was one of two girls of Finlay and Margaret (Larner) McDonell. She was born in Detroit. Sister Ruth attended St. Agnes Grade and High School in Detroit, but graduated from St. Mary Academy, Monroe. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1939, taking the religious name of Sister Marie Elise.

Sister Ruth earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and two master's degrees, one from the Catholic University of Washington, D.C., and the other from Loyola University, Chicago. She taught in formal education for 16 years at Immaculata, Detroit; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Westchester, Ill. From 1951-1960, Sister Ruth was in charge of the Sisters entering the IHM community as postulants. 

Following her years in formal education, Sister Ruth ministered in the Archdiocese of Chicago for eight years on the Catholic School Board of Chicago as religious education director, teacher trainer and secondary high school consultant. From 1975-1980, she ministered as a specialist in adolescent catechesis at the U.S. Catholic Conference in Washington, D.C. For the next nine years, Sister Ruth was director of the religious education center at St. Mary's Parish in Milford, Mich. The next several years found her involved in adult education, tutoring, and mentoring. She retired in 2001 and returned to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe in 2004, entering the Health Care Center in 2006 where she resided until her death. She was 90. This is her Remembering.

Sister Ruth is survived by her nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Perkins.

Moir, Marie Ellen (Mary Gildas), IHM
Aug. 9, 1920 - July 19, 2008

Sister Marie Ellen was one of four children, two boys and two girls, of Robert and Loretta (Sloan) Moir. She attended Epiphany Elementary School and St. Mary of Redford High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1939, taking the religious name of Sister Mary Gildas.

Sister Marie Ellen earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and her master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 30 years at Holy Redeemer, St. Cecilia, St. Mary of Redford, Christ the King, and St. Raymond, Detroit; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; Sacred Heart, Roseville; St. Stephen, Port Huron; St. Agatha, Redford Township; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens and Holy Cross, Marine City.

Sister Marie Ellen spent 16 of the next 21 years in counseling as director of guidance/counselor at St. Dennis in Royal Oak; Sacred Heart, Pensacola, Fla.; St. Bede, Southfield; and Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak. From 1983-1987, she was a part-time teacher and on the office staff of Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, followed by a year in adult education at Madison Heights schools. Sister Marie Ellen volunteered in pastoral care for a year and as chaplain assistant at Providence Hospital for three years. She retired to St. Mary Center in Monroe before moving to the Motherhouse in 2000. She spent the last two years of her life in the Health Care Center. She was 87. Here is her Remembering.

Grix, Annunciata, IHM
Aug. 16, 1908 - July 9, 2008

Sister Annunciata was one of three girls of George and Anna (Wagner) Grix. She was born in Detroit, Mich., and given the name Katherine. Sister Annunciata attended Annunciation Elementary and High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1929, taking the religious name of Sister Annunciata.

Sister Annunciata earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from Wayne State University. She ministered in formal education for 46 years at St. Mary Elementary School and St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Stephen, Port Huron; St. Agnes, Immaculata High School, St. Charles and St. Martin, Detroit; Sacred Heart, Dearborn and St. Patrick, Wyandotte. After a year of teaching at St. Mary Academy, Sister Annunciata ministered for four years as Assistant Principal and for four years as business manager at St. Mary Academy.

In 1976 Sister Annunciata became a staff member for the SSIHM congregation and for the next 14 years served as receptionist and secretary to the Central Administration of the IHM community. From 1979 to 1998 she was secretary for the IHM Development Fund. She will be remembered for her personal contact with benefactors of the congregation. Sister Annunciata retired in 1998 and became a patient in the Health Care Center in 2000 where she resided until her death. She was 99. Remembering for Sister Annunciata.

Mahoney, Maurine (Hilarie), IHM
June 22, 1915 - June 4, 2008

Sister Maurine was one of four children, one boy and three girls of John and Zelia (Hopkins) Mahoney. She was born in Detroit and attended several elementary schools, New Hudson in New Hudson, Mich; St. Cecilia and St. Brigid in Detroit and graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in Monroe in 1933, taking the religious name of Sister Hilaire.

Sister Maurine earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 52 years at Luke M. Powers, St. Matthew and St. Michael in Flint; St. Matthew, St. Catherine and St. Mary of Redford, Detroit; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; St. Vincent, Pontiac; Marian High School, Bloomfield Hills; and St. Mary Academy, Monroe. Sister Maurine was dedicated and highly respected by both students and faculty.

Sister Maurine retired to the Motherhouse in 1988. For nine years she worked part-time in the Service Office and tutored students at the Motherhouse. She enjoyed playing cards and was excellent at Scrabble. She entered the Health Care Center in 2007 and resided there until her death. She was 92.

Sister Maurine is survived by her sister, Patricia (Mrs. Harold Haas) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, John, and her sister, Margaret (Mrs. Fred Haack). We invite you to read Sister Maurine's Remembering.

Chiaverini, Joanne (Giovanni), IHM
April 18, 1940-June 4, 2008

Sister Joanne was one of three children, one boy and two girls, of John and Mary (Madonna) Chiaverini. She was born in Detroit and attended Holy Redeemer Elementary and High Schools. She became a member of the IHM, in 1957, taking the religious name of Sister Giovanni.

She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Marygrove College. She taught in formal education for seven years at St. Hugo, Bloomfield Hills; Epiphany and St. Agnes, Detroit; and St. Michael, Flint. For the six years, Sister Joanne ministered at St. John, Jackson as diocesan religion consultant; four years at O'Sullivan Elementary School as teacher, and religious education coordinator, and a year at Mayotte Primary School, Flint.

In 1975, Sister Joanne co-founded St. Francis Prayer Center in Flint with the Rev. Philip Schmitter. She was involved in this ministry for the next 33 years as director, spiritual director and administrator. She developed and directed a nine-week "in-home retreat program." She shared her skills and compassion with many inner city organizations and schools and was active in interfaith efforts for more than 25 years.

Parran, Connie (Silverius), IHM

Sept. 30, 1921 - May 21, 2008

Sister Connie was one of five children, two boys and three girls, of Alfred and Stella (Schiech) Parran. She was born in Monroe and given the name Constance Marie. Sister Connie attended elementary school at Baum and St. Joseph in Monroe and high school at St. Joseph, Maybee, and St. Mary Academy, Monroe. She became a member of the IHM in 1940, taking the religious name Sister Silverius.

Sister Connie earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 29 years at All Saints, St. Martin, Holy Trinity, Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Matthew and St. Raymond, Detroit; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; Holy Name, Birmingham; St. Patrick, Carleton; St. Matthew, Flint; St. Stephen, Port Huron; St. Michael, Maple Grove, Mich.; St. Stephen Indian Mission, Wyo.; St. Dennis, Royal Oak; and St. Michael, Monroe.

For 28 years, Sister Connie ministered as coordinator of religious education at St. Michael, Monroe and Prince of Peace, West Bloomfield, Mich.; liturgical coordinator at St. Michael, Maple Grove; pastoral assistant, St. Raymond, Detroit; and director of Christian service at St. Dennis, Royal Oak. She also helped organize the Warming Center for the South Oakland Shelter in Royal Oak. She retired in 2000 and moved to the Motherhouse in 2001. Sister Connie entered the Health Care Center in 2002 where she resided until her death. 

Sister Connie is survived by her brother, Ronald, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Bernice (Mrs. Joseph Giljum) and Leona (Mrs. William McMullen), and her brother, Alvin. She was 86. We invite you to read her Remembering.

Robb, Mary Leon, IHM
Dec. 16, 1909 - May 9, 2008

Sister Mary Leon Robb, IHM, was one of five children, two boys and three girls, of William and Agnes (Ellsworth) Robb. She was born in Howell, Mich., and given the name Marion. Sister Mary Leon attended elementary school and high school at St. Mary Academy in Monroe. She became a member of the IHM in 1928.

Sister Mary Leon earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 48 years at St. Charles, Newport; Blessed Sacrament, St. Gregory, St. Boniface and St. Agnes, Detroit; SS. Peter and Paul, Ionia; St. Stephen, Port Huron; St. Philip Battle Creek; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge and Holy Ghost, Albuquerque, N.M.

Following her years at Holy Ghost School, Sister Mary Leon ministered for five years to the elderly and as pastoral assistant at Assumption Parish in Albuquerque. She retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 1982 and remained actively involved. Sister Mary Leon entered the Health Care Center in 2006 where she resided until her death.  She was 98. Sister Mary Leon is survived by her sister Margaret (Mrs. Joseph Brady), nieces, nephews and a cousin. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James and Leon, and her sister, Anna (Mrs. Robert Peters).

Johnson, Jane (Marmion), IHM 
May 13, 1921 - April 22, 2008

Sister Jane was one of four children, one boy and three girls, of Herbert and Jean (McGovern) Johnson. She was born in Flint and given the name Jane. Sister Jane attended several elementary schools in Flint and graduated from St. Michael High School. She became a member of the the IHM in 1938, taking the religious name of Sister Marmion.

Sister Jane earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. She ministered for 28 years in formal education at Christ the King, Epiphany, St. Vincent, St. Gregory and Immaculata High School, Detroit; St. Joseph and St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Philip, Battle Creek; and three years in Fort Portal, Uganda, East Africa.

For seven years, Sister Jane ministered as IHM community treasurer and Leadership Council member. After her three years in Uganda, she spent a year as coordinator at IHM Hospitality House in Detroit. In 1978 Sister Jane began her ministry in Florida as librarian at St. Michael School, Miami, and Nativity School, Hollywood, Fla. She spent four years taking care of her mother and then retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe. Sister Jane was actively involved during her retirement years in short-term committee work, in the environment and education, and during the renovation of the Motherhouse her expertise was invaluable in the purchase of appliances. She entered the Health Care Center in 2007 where she resided until her death. She was 86.

Sister Jane is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Monica (Mrs. J. Donald Gunnels) and Pauline (Mrs. George Nixon) and her brother, Thomas. Here is Sister's Remembering.

Markey, Mary Louise (Eileen Therese), IHM
Oct. 6, 1927 - April 3, 2008

Sister Mary Louise Markey, IHM, was one of six children, three boys and three girls of Norman and Nora (Mullane) Markey. She was born in Detroit and given the name Mary Louise. Sister Mary Louise attended St. Boniface and St. Mary of Redford Elementary Schools and graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1946, taking the religious name of Sister Eileen Therese.

Sister Mary Louise earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 23 years at St. Raymond, St. Rose, Queen of Hope, St. Mary of Redford, Detroit; and St. Columban, Birmingham. After eight years at St. Columban, Sister Mary Louise worked in pastoral ministry at St. Columban Parish in religious education and was a member of the pastoral team. In 1978, she began her 16-year ministry as pastoral associate at St. Blase Catholic Church in Birmingham, Mich.

Sister Mary Louise was involved in the care of her sister for one year and spent her sabbatical year in Florida caring for Ann Marie Quinlan, IHM, until her death. She also served as pastoral minister at St. Rita Parish, Holly, Mich. In 1999 she retired and lived at Norman Towers Senior Residence in Monroe. She returned to the Motherhouse in 2005 and entered the Health Care Center in 2006 where she resided until her death. 

Sister Mary Louise is survived by her brothers, Norman and Gerald, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis, and sisters, Lois and Sister Eileen (Marie Norman), IHM. She was 80. We invite you to read her Remembering.

Glaser, Helen (Marianna), IHM
Feb. 4, 1918 - March 5, 2008

Sister Helen was one of seven children, three boys, and four girls, of Joseph and Myrtle (Lathrop) Glaser. She attended Holy Redeemer elementary and high schools in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1936, taking the religious name of Sister Marianna.

Sister Helen earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, and a master's degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 29 years at Sacred Heart, Dearborn; St. Cecilia, St. Francis de Sales, Detroit; St. Stephen, Port Huron; Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; and St. Michael, Flint. 

In 1967, Sister Helen became a consultant for the Archdiocese of Detroit for two years. For the next eight years, she ministered as consultant, parish coordinator and religious education coordinator at the Archdiocese of Detroit, Shrine High School and parish in Royal Oak, and St. Anselm Parish in Dearborn Heights. Sister Helen was guidance counselor at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills for the next eight years. Her greatest interest was in listening and helping others with their problems. She returned to the Motherhouse as nursing personnel director until 1992 when she retired. During retirement, Sister Helen volunteered in the IHM Archives. She entered the Health Care Center in 2007 where she resided until her death.  

Sister Helen is survived by her sisters, Nancy (Gefford), Sister Ruth, IHM, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, John, Robert, and her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Staff). She was 90. Here is her Remembering.

Phillips, Marie Madeline, IHM
April 7, 1909 - Jan. 30, 2008

Sister Marie Madeline Phillips, IHM, 98, died on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at the Health Care Center in Monroe, Mich.

Sister Marie Madeline was one of two children, one boy and one girl, of William and Wilhemina (Viol) Phillips. She was born on April 7, 1909, in Detroit and given the name Marie. Sister Marie Madeline attended elementary school at Julia Ward Howe and Annunciation and graduated from Annunciation High School in Detroit. She became a member of the IHM in 1929, taking the religious name of Sister Marie Madeline.

Sister Marie Madeline earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a master's degree from Wayne State University. She taught in formal education for 43 years at St. Vincent, St. Catherine, Holy Redeemer, St. Charles, St. Cecilia, St. Mary of Redford and St. Francis de Sales, Detroit; St. Mary Elementary, St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; St. Patrick Wyandotte, St. Stephen, Port Huron; St. John, Jackson; and Holy Ghost, Albuquerque, N.M.

In 1969, Sister Marie Madeline ministered at the Reading Clinic at Marygrove doing diagnostic testing and tutoring of adults in reading. She retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 1977 and corresponded faithfully with former students and friends. She was an avid reader. Sister Marie Madeline entered the Health Care Center in 1996, where she resided until her death. 

Sister Marie Madeline was preceded in death by her brother, Robert. She is survived by a niece and cousins.  We invite you to read sister's Remembering.
