RN/LPN Charge Nurse

      

 

The Charge Nurse functions as a leader of the nursing team on an assigned floor and for an assigned shift, coordinates the total care of the residents, and directly supervises the CENA staff.

Principal duties and responsbilities 

·         Assist Unit Manager in planning and supervising resident care.

·         Supervise nursing personnel in assigned area.

·         Consult with and keep physician informed regarding the general condition of each resident as appropriate and inform him/her of a resident's death.

·         Assist in monitoring seriously ill residents. Notify supervisor of a change of condition.

·         Coordinate and supervise daily work assignments of nursing personnel.

·         Work at creating an environment that will foster a spirit of cooperation and efficiency on the unit.

·         Assume administrative responsibility for the unit and for its general appearance.

·         Attend report at the beginning and end of shift.

·         Make daily rounds to residents in order to observe and evaluate their physical and emotional condition.

·         Maintain confidentiality.

·         Assume responsibility for the preparation and distribution of medication.

·         Assist staff with resident care as needed and appropriate, this includes hands-on care.

·         Evaluate the work performance of assigned personnel and monitor the progress of new nursing personnel.

·         Complete accident/incident reports as needed and inform Supervisor.

·         Ensure that all record keeping, written reports, charting, written records, and other clerical duties are up-to-date and completed professionally.

·         Prepare written updates of residents' conditions. Updates include the following: admissions/discharges, abnormal tests, change of condition, and/or other pertinent information.

·         Ensure that any disciplinary action is administered fairly, carefully documented and communicated to Supervisor.

·         Order floor supplies as necessary.

·         Ensure that all maintenance problems are reported.

Qualifications

·         A nursing degree from an accredited college, university or school of nursing, or a graduate of an approved RN/LPN/LVN program.

·         Experience as a charge nurse in a hospital, long-term facility, or other related health care facility preferred.

·         Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices in gerontology preferred.

·         Current, unencumbered Michigan license to practice as an RN or an LPN.

·         Knowledge of current nursing and medical practices and procedures.

·         Communication skills to present information and ideas essential to supervisory duties and to maintain good relationships with staff and medical personnel.

·         Ability to plan, organize, develop and implement programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures necessary for quality care.

·         Ability to learn, understand and support the IHM mission and values.

·         Patience, tact, enthusiasm, cheerfulness.

·         Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

·         Flexibility to accommodate variable eight-hour responsibility.

·         Verbal ability as required to understand instructions, medical terminology and concepts, and to communicate with residents and staff.  Writing ability to keep accurate records.

·         Ability to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

·         Good general health and emotional stability.

·         Ability to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and, at times, hostile residents within the facility.

·         Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds or more.

Nursing care is provided 24/7.
